Birdstep Enhances Secure, Seamless Connectivity for Mobile Workers with SafeMove 6.0
OSLO, Norway – 18 June 2012 - Birdstep Technology (www.birdstep.com), a leading provider of Smart Mobile Data and Secure Mobility services, helps enterprises to offer an unparalleled user experience for their mobile workforce with the release of SafeMove Mobile VPN 6.0.
This SafeMove MVPN version with significant new features enables easy and secure access to the corporate internal network, making it even more user-friendly and may lead to significant cost-savings. Mobile workers are more productive wherever their work takes them, and businesses can maximize mobile workforce productivity while minimizing wireless access costs.
The new features include Automatic Hotspot detection, Split tunnelling, a new roaming policy for cost savings and support for IPv6.
Automatic Hotspot detection. Improved detection of hotspot captive portals: No false positives, the login assistant is only offered when a captive portal with a web landing page is positively detected. The login assistant is automatically launched when a captive portal is detected, without separate user intervention.
Split tunnelling. Fine grained policy for which traffic to encrypt and tunnel, and which traffic to pass directly to the internet. This can be leveraged toreduce load on the enterprise Internet. It also can reduce performance requirements for the enterprise network, as performance sensitive applications such as real time video and VoIP need not unnecessarily pass through the enterprise network. This feature also allows access to resources not available from the enterprise network, such as home network printers. Available only for Windows 7.
The Roaming policy feature enables the SafeMove client to detect when Windows 7 WWAN is roaming in a foreign operator network. The client can then apply a special firewall policy to block certain traffic, e.g.:
- Block Windows Update
- Allow only certain business critical applications, such as email
This can lead to significant cost savings and prevent users from inadvertently using costly, volume-based data services.
IPv6 Support makes itpossible to reach IPv6 services on SafeMove-enabled laptops. While full IPv6 support with seamless handovers is not yet publicly available, Birdstep customers can contact the company for a preview.
