SmartConnect - FAQ

Q: I upgraded firmware version of my phone using Nokia Software updater. After firmware upgrade SmartConnect says that I have unlicensed version. How can I fix it? Before it was working fine.
A: Uninstall the SmartConnect. Open the File Manager and go to others folder. Remove the Birdstep folder. Install SmartConnect again.

Q: I installed the SmartConnect by Birdstep from Nokia Download. I get no license notifications when trying to use it.
A: Uninstall the SmartConnect. Open the File Manager and go to others folder. Remove the Birdstep folder. Refresh the Nokia Download list. Install SmartConnect again. If no license note still comes import the file which is inside the following zip. Move the file to phone and use the File Manager to open it or send it via bluetooth and open the attachment.


Q: It shows a warning about its not able to connect and selecting OK phone might crash and reboot. What to do?
A: Update to version 1.2.61 or later. [Affected SmartConnect versions 1.2.54]

Q: I have created more than one connection group. I use the first group from one application and I try to use some other from some other application, but the first connecting group would be used. What to do?
A: This is a known limitation/problem. [Affected SmartConnect versions 1.2.54, 1.2.61]

Q: VPN connection for example with mVPN does not work with SmartConnect. How to fix it?
A: This is a known limitation with free SmartConnect application. When seamless roaming feature is enabled VPN connections work.

Q: SIP registration fails when using the SmartConnect connection. What is wrong?
A: This is a known limitation with free SmartConnect application. When seamless roaming feature is enabled SIP registrations also work.

Q: Where can I find the setting for the seamless roaming?
A: Free SmartConnect application does not contain the seamless roaming option. If you need seamless roaming feature please contact safemove.sales@birdstep.com.

Q: Is SmartConnect a client-server application?
A: Free SmartConnect application is a client only application. The seamless roaming feature needs Mobile IP HA so that feature needs the server side also.

Q: Is there any trick I could apply to make the firewall accessable? Does Smartconnect require a certain port I would have to add to the firewall settings?
A: There is no official support for any firewall application used with free SmartConnect application. When using the seamless roaming feature there is a support for F-Secure firewall application.

Q: I have been unable to download SmartConnect via the Nokia Download application on my E71. I have tried several access points over several days. Is there an internet download location?
A: You can find the latest SmartConnect from http://www.birdstep.com/Products/Birdstep/SmartConnect/ or you can download it from Nokia Ovi Store also if your phone is supported http://store.ovi.com/.

Q: Connection switches nicely from WLAN to 3G but it does not change from 3G to WLAN. What is wrong?
A: Please check the following setting. Open the SmartConnect and go to used connection group, options->Group settings->On better connection. Please check that it is set to Disconnect. Even if this is set to Disconnect, it does not always change from 3G to WLAN depending on used application and how it uses the connection. Please consider the seamless roaming option if roaming between connections is needed.
