Birdstep receives order on security product from major Nordic mobile operator
The security software is an Intrusion Detection System and an Intrusion Prevention System (IDS/IPS) and will delivered nationwide to 700 access locations. The software product will be used to detect and prevent misbehaving mobile broadband users from causing problems with the network or conducting criminal activities.
(Oslo, November 6, 2007) Birdstep Technology ASA, the leading provider of secure seamless connectivity and mobility software for laptops, PDA’s and Smartphones, has received a license order to upgrade an existing major Nordic mobile operator customer with a security software module. The security software will be delivered as an upgrade to the existing wireless broadband platform and will ensure that the mobile operator customer will be able to deliver the wireless broadband service according to service level agreement signed with end-customers.
The intrusion detection and Intrusion preventions system will be used to detect and identify users that spread viruses or send spam and thereby consume the entire broadband capacity on the behalf of other well behaving customers. If the customer detects a misbehaving user they can minimize the broadband capacity or even shut the user off the mobile broadband service.
“We are proud to work together with the mobile operator in improving the service level and quality for so many mobile broadband users. In addition, this is yet another prestigious order delivered through the acquisition of Service Factory from an existing customer that will generate license revenue in the fourth quarter “ said Petri Markkanen, CEO Birdstep Technology.
The upgrade is an important step towards providing improved uptime of the wireless mobile broadband network and minimizes the possibility for one single user to slow down the wireless zone service.
“The IDS/IPS module will be used for example to prevent one single individual from blocking the entire mobile broadband zone in the Swedish ski resort, Åre, during the downhill world championships. At those events there are a number of journalists attending and they are dependent on the wireless broadband service to be able to send text and high resolution pictures to the editor before deadline” explains Petri Markkanen, CEO at Birdstep Technology.
The customer’s mobile Wireless Broadband offering is present in strategic locations throughout all Nordic countries and in the Baltic region. This means all major places travelers visit; hotels, cafés, restaurants, railway stations and airports.
